Reverb11 – Intuition

My intuition this year told me that I needed to explore myself and my art this year. It’s been a fun journey.

I took part in several e-courses this year which was something new to me. I particularly liked Susannah Conway’s Unravelling course. I met some amazing women through this course while exploring myself through pictures and text.

My decision to host Reverb11 prompts this year was also driven by intuition. There are things I want to do and they involve Reverb-type prompts so this was a great chance for me to explore what it would be like to host prompts for other people.

This year I’ve been doing a lot with mixed media and photography. Mixed media-wise, I’ve gotten some pretty interesting pages started and I’m actually putting my work out into public spaces, which is scary but exciting at the same time. My art’s also allowed me to create some wonderful gifts for my family. Next year my intuition is telling me that I need make the leap and teach at least one class this year at my favorite upcycling hangout, Texas Art Asylum and I’m to tackle the fear of sewing I have.

As for my photography, I’ve started working in film formats again. While digital format is a good thing in terms of cost, analog formats force you to slow down and really compose a picture. Here are some of my favorite images from the last year (both digital and analog).

Resound 2011 – Super Powers

Resound11′s prompt asks what are your super powers (a.k.a. the things you are really good at or talents).

  1. Writing: While I write expository pieces here. In my career, I’m a technical writer and I spend a lot of time crafting manuals and documenting processes. I believe that technical writing is a very creative process. I would have never thought that the seventh grade girl who wrote journal entries and poems would end up with a career in writing that pays pretty well.
  2. Data Analysis:Writing is just part of what I do in my career. I also work with a lot of data on my customer’s machines and in the production database my application writes to. I love looking at the data and being able to see patterns. I love being able to look at the data and see where we need to fix something. There are times I get frustrated (like when I realize we don’t have a full understanding of part of the process), but overall its a great skill and I love that it’s transferable.
  3. Photography:I’ve been working with cameras since I was on the yearbook staff under Mr. D. He gave me a love for making images and gave me the technical know-how to develop my own film (B&W only and you can do it in your own bathroom in most cases). I was also very fortunate to work with William Gillette while attending Iowa State. He influenced me to explore the aspects of where I was at and the people I am with.

How wonderful that you are listening to your intuition and honoring your creativity!

It’s taken me a while to get to that place. My mother’s death had a lot do to with me exploring my creativity. And the next phase that my intuition is telling me to do so is de-clutter before the start of the new year. There’s soo much stuff that needs to go to a new home or be recycled.

I LOVE where your intuition is leading you! This artwork is gorgeous. The one of you with your feet in the water–I could actually FEEL it. That was my first reaction to that photo, not an emotional one, but a physical one. I also love the one of the roses by the grave sight. Lovely.

I love my Gulf. I know there are people who pooh pooh it but it is a good place to unwind (although I think I would freeze my tootsies if I tried that picture today!)

The roses were a really interesting find in one of the graveyards here in Houston. I love going to graveyards and seeing what I can find to make images. People leave some interesting things on graves.

  4. You’re doing the right thing following your intuition. That’s obvious. Your photos, your creations are spectacular!

Welcome to my site and thank you! The current “project” is getting the craft area of my apartment cleaned up so I have more time for doing things I enjoy. I’m tired of being choked to death by my own clutter and I won’t feel guilty if I craft instead of clean.

  5. Wow. I love your art. I have created more mixed media pieces this year, too. What a great place: Texas Art Asylum. A lot of my recent art are mixed media pieces dealing with women artists, poets and writers who had Mental Illness.

Don’t you love the kindreds we meet via Reverbing?

    • Head Pickle says:

Thank you for your kind comments Julie.

I do. One of my biggest gripes about the blogging community is that is seems to all be made up of Mommy Bloggers. But the two years I’ve done Reverb, I’ve met some amazing women both virturally and in person who are very much kindred spirits.
