When I posted last week I was in the process of doing some heavy weeding. After a few several weeks of doing a bare minimum of stuff because of a crazy work schedule and a trip to Iowa, I came back to a garden that looked like this:

Its taken me a couple of weeks to get everything cleaned up. I pulled the bulk of the weeds last night (with plans to finish up the rest tonight) and ended up with another pile similar to the one below:

The Garden looks barren right now except for the miscellaneous pepper plants and two eggplants that remain. While I was hoping that I’d have everything done and would be doing some planting yesterday, rain put a kibosh on the plans I had. But, it’s all good.
Based on the information I got from Urban Harvest here in Houston, I’m going to switch to a more sustainable format that allows for crop rotation and year around planting (one of the big advantages of living in Zone 9!!). I’m also going to expand the garden a bit as well. I’m excited for the upcoming changes.

Lately at work, the dress code as been a little lax. Its hot. Its summer. And I’ll admit, I haven’t been following the dress code as strictly as I should have.
But things have been changing with my promotion and some work that my team is doing. We’ve been working on better defining how our team will operate and how we will interact with each other. As part of this ongoing discussion, we’re talking about image and how we present ourselves. And the fact of the matter is that if I want to get promoted again, not only do I have to act at that level, I also have to dress the part. That means Nice shirt/pants/dress/skirt ,etc so that if I get called into an impromptu meeting, I am ready to rock and roll.
So I’m cleaning up my act a little bit (this is going to be an ongoing evolution because I’m a jeans and t-shirt girl). I’m taking stock of my wardrobe and making adjustments. I’m making plans on how I’m going to handle moving my professional wardrobe as I lose weight. I’ve also squirreled a jacket into my closet in my work station. That way if I get called into that impromptu meeting with the Vice President – I’m ready.

I’m not talking about the Song by Barry Macguire, I’m talking about weeding and lots of it.
Unfortunately with an emergency trip home to see my mom, lots of stuff going on at the office, and recovery from the trip, I haven’t been paying my garden much attention for the last month and when I went to check it out last night, I was not suprised to see it overgrown with bermuda grass and morning glory vines. I began pulling stuff up last night, but I got serious about tonight when I went back over to start weeding. In just over an hour’s period of time, I had a pile of garden refuse that was about 3 feet tall.
Unfortunately it won’t be the last of the destruction. There is more weeding to be done and then there is prep work for the fall garden. Time to amend the garden with manure and grass clippings. Then the planting will begin.
I bought two Purple Calabash tomatoes today and will plant them later this week.

In my wanderings this morning, I came across a wonderful blog post written by a We’ll Know When We Get There. In the post she describes the pen pal relationship that her and Mr. Hughes has over a period of 2 years and how they reconnected when she was an adult.
It’s a beautiful homage to someone who made us feel like someone out there understood the turbulence of being a teen and who made us laugh with movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Enjoy!
